Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Pet Anxiety in Dogs and Cats: Understanding the Signs and How to Help

Just like people, pets can experience stress and anxiety. While occasional nervousness is normal, ongoing anxiety can affect a pet's behavior, health, and quality of life.

Because anxiety can develop gradually, many pet owners may not recognize the signs right away. Understanding what pet anxiety looks like and how to support your dog or cat can make a meaningful difference.

What Is Pet Anxiety?

Pet anxiety happens when a dog or cat feels worried, fearful, or uncertain about a situation. Sometimes the trigger is clear, such as fireworks, thunderstorms, travel, or a veterinary visit. Other times, anxiety may be linked to changes in routine, unfamiliar environments, separation from family members, or past experiences.

Anxiety becomes a concern when it interferes with daily life or causes ongoing behavioral changes.

Common Causes of Anxiety in Pets

Every pet is different, and anxiety can develop for many reasons.

Household changes are common triggers. Moving, adding a new pet, welcoming a new family member, or changing a daily schedule can create stress for some animals.

Loud noises are another frequent cause. Fireworks, storms, construction, and other sudden sounds can feel overwhelming. Some dogs may become anxious when left alone, while some cats may react to environmental changes or tension with other pets.

Anxiety can also become more noticeable as pets age and experience physical or cognitive changes.

Signs Your Pet May Be Anxious

Anxiety does not look the same in every pet. Some become restless or vocal, while others hide or withdraw.

Common signs may include pacing, panting, trembling, hiding, increased vocalization, destructive behavior, appetite changes, excessive licking or grooming, difficulty settling, or house-soiling in a previously trained pet.

Because these behaviors can also be related to medical conditions, sudden or ongoing changes should be taken seriously.

How Routine Can Help

Pets feel more secure when life is predictable. Consistent meals, exercise, playtime, and rest can help reduce uncertainty and support emotional well-being.

Even simple habits, such as feeding at similar times each day or keeping walks on a regular schedule, can help anxious pets feel more confident.

Creating a Calmer Home Environment

A quiet, comfortable space can help pets cope during stressful moments. This might be a bedroom, crate, or low-traffic area with familiar bedding, toys, or blankets.

For noise-related anxiety, background sound from a fan, television, or calming music may help soften sudden outside noises. Regular exercise, puzzle toys, training, and interactive play can also help reduce stress and support confidence.

When Anxiety May Need More Support

Occasional stress is normal, but ongoing anxiety can impact daily life. If your pet is frequently fearful, destructive, unable to relax, sleeping poorly, or showing changes in appetite or behavior, additional support may be needed.

Understanding the cause of anxiety is an important step toward helping your pet feel better. With patience, consistency, and the right support, many pets can become more comfortable and confident over time.

Helping Your Pet Live More Comfortably

Pet anxiety can affect dogs and cats of any age, breed, or personality. The encouraging news is that it is often manageable.

By recognizing early signs, reducing known triggers, and creating a more predictable environment, pet owners can help their pets feel safer and more secure. Every pet responds differently, so progress may take time.

With steady support, many anxious pets can better navigate stressful situations and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Nutrition is the foundation of good health, and a powerful tool in managing weight, energy, chronic conditions, and even behavior.

Pet Nutrition

Spaying or neutering your pet is one of the most important decisions you can make for their long-term health. It helps prevent certain cancers and infections, curbs unwanted behaviors, and reduces the number of orphaned pets in shelters.

Spay And Neuter

Your pet can't tell you when something's wrong. That's why regular wellness exams are so important. These visits give us the chance to catch health issues early, before they become painful or costly.

Wellness Exams

Bad breath isn't just annoying - it's often a sign of deeper health issues. Dental disease in pets can lead to oral pain, local or systemic infection, tooth loss, and even heart, liver, or kidney complications.

Dental Care

Fleas, ticks, and intestinal worms are not just a nuisance, they are dangerous. These tiny pests can cause serious health issues like Lyme disease, heartworm disease, and tapeworms.

Parasite Prevention

Vaccines are one of the most important tools we have to protect pets from serious, often deadly diseases. Whether you have a rambunctious or a relaxed pet, vaccinations help your pet build strong immunity and avoid preventable illness.

Vaccinations

Comprehensive surgical services, from routine procedures to complex operations, all are performed with expert care.

Pet Surgeries

When your pet isn't acting like themselves, diagnostic testing helps us find the reason. From bloodwork, urine testing, and fecal exams to x-rays, these tests give us a window into what's happening inside, so we can take action before things get worse.
