Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Preventive dental care protects pets from disease progression and reduces the likelihood of expensive treatments later in life. Understanding how dental disease develops, and how costs rise with severity, helps families make informed decisions about their pet’s oral health.

Why Preventive Dental Care Costs Less

Dental disease follows a gradual progression from plaque to tartar to deeper infection. When identified early, treatment is straightforward. A routine dental cleaning performed under anesthesia removes plaque and tartar before they cause structural damage. These cleanings are far less costly than managing established periodontal disease. Early gingival inflammation can often be resolved with scaling and polishing. As long as disease remains above or just below the gumline, treatment remains predictable and affordable. This is why veterinarians recommend annual oral exams and proactive cleanings. Addressing disease before it reaches the deeper tissues prevents costly complications.

How Costs Increase as Dental Disease Progresses

As dental disease advances, treatment becomes more involved and expenses rise accordingly. The change from early to moderate disease is often where costs begin to escalate. Stage 1 involves mild inflammation, with treatment generally limited to professional cleaning and home care. In Stage 2 to 3, tartar extends beneath the gumline, and deeper periodontal pockets may be present. At this stage, costs increase because dental radiographs are needed to evaluate the roots and bone, and some teeth may require advanced cleaning or extraction. Stage 4 disease involves significant periodontal destruction. Multiple teeth may be loose or infected, requiring surgical extractions, extended anesthesia, pain control, and follow up care. These cases are more complex and significantly more expensive than preventive treatment. Delaying care allows disease to reach these advanced stages.

Why Preventive Dental Care Is a Financial Advantage

Preventive care avoids the need for advanced interventions and the additional procedures that accompany them. Early care generally requires shorter anesthesia duration, fewer diagnostic imaging needs, little to no surgical intervention, lower medication requirements, and a reduced risk of emergency visits related to oral pain or infection. In contrast, advanced periodontal disease often requires imaging, surgical extraction, infection management, pain medications, and post operative rechecks, all of which increase total cost.

Protecting Long Term Health Through Prevention

The benefits of preventive dental care extend beyond cost savings. When dental disease is caught early, pets experience less discomfort, better quality of life, and a lower risk of complications. Chronic oral inflammation and infection can affect the heart, liver, and kidneys. Preventing these systemic effects supports both longevity and overall health. Early intervention also reduces the number of extractions needed over a pet’s lifetime, preserving healthy teeth and promoting comfortable chewing and digestion.

Why Annual Dental Exams Matter

Veterinary dental exams are essential for detecting subtle changes that may not be visible at home. Early tartar accumulation, mild gum recession, or changes in tooth alignment can signal the beginning stages of disease. When addressed promptly, most pets can avoid costly advanced interventions. During dental exams, your veterinarian evaluates each tooth, the gumline, and early signs of inflammation. Annual assessments help maintain a timeline of your pet’s oral health and determine when a professional cleaning is recommended.

Home Care That Supports Prevention

Home care complements professional dental cleanings and helps extend the benefits of preventive treatment. Daily brushing with pet safe toothpaste slows plaque accumulation. Dental diets, oral rinses, and veterinary approved dental chews can also help maintain oral health. While home care supports prevention, it cannot replace the deep cleaning that occurs under anesthesia. Pets whose families maintain regular home care often require fewer interventions over time, contributing to improved health and lower total dental care costs.

Prevention Protects Pets and Saves Money

Waiting to address dental disease often results in higher veterinary costs and more complex treatment plans. Early intervention remains the most effective approach for protecting your pet’s health while avoiding unnecessary expenses. Preventive dental care keeps pets comfortable, reduces the need for surgical procedures, and helps families manage long term healthcare costs more effectively. Schedule a dental evaluation with your nearest United Veterinary Care clinic to learn how preventive care can support your pet’s oral health and help you avoid the cost of advanced dental treatment.

Dental disease is one of the most common conditions seen in veterinary medicine, and it progresses in a predictable way. What begins as minor plaque buildup can advance to painful periodontal disease if left untreated. While many pet owners assume dental care is something they can postpone, delaying treatment often leads to significantly higher veterinary costs. Early prevention is both medically beneficial and financially wise.
