A thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland. This procedure is occasionally performed on cats with hyperthyroidism (a condition of the thyroid gland where too much thyroid hormone is produced usually due to tumor formation). Cats with this condition can often be treated by removal of the portion of the gland causing the problem. Medication is generally used at first to reduce their thyroid level and to help stablize them before surgery is performed. Cats receiving this procedure usually do extremely well and don't require further medical treatment for the initial problem.
